Cakespy Pi Pie

Pi Pie by Cakespy

Here are some of my latest published pieces. I have been writing for Zagat and MSNBC quite a bit. Check them out!

Celebrate Pi Day With Pie: Who knew math could be so tasty? Today is Pi Day, the time when nerds rejoice because the date, 3-14, lines up to the infinite number pi, otherwise known as 3.14159265… And, just as there are thousands of numbers in pi, there are also thousands of types of pie, and thousands of excuses to eat pie…(continue reading)

I did these photos of some food world records by the World Record Appreciation Society at Crash Mansion for Time Out New York last month.  They came out pretty cool.

Check out the slide show here.

Hello Cupcake: World’s Largest

veras-cupcake

The whole point of a cupcake is that it’s small and delicious. Not 151 pounds.  Leave it to Americans to build it.  AOL News reported:  “The 1-foot tall, 2-foot wide cupcake on display Saturday at the Minneapolis Mall of America had 15 pounds of fudge filling and 60 pounds of yellow icing.” Jeeze!  Even though it made it to the Guinness Book of World Records, I do not want that, and neither did the people.  Apparently they gave the world record cake to a pig farm and feed the a decent sized portion.

(This is a normal sized cupcake made by Vera, much better I think)

Hello Cupcake: JFK

Cup cakes at JFK, Jetblue terminal

Yes, the airport! The jetblue terminal to be exact. When I was getting ready to leave for Denver a few weeks ago I spotted these moist, succulent beauties. I remember when all airports had was limp sandwiches, chips and sad apples. Now, the airport food culture is booming!

Hello Cupcake: Cupcake Contest at Union Pool

Cupcakes with butter cream froasting at Union Pool

Nothing would have stopped me from going to Union Pool’s cupcake contest in Williamsburg, Brooklyn last night.  I mean, FREE cupcakes?  TONS of flavors?  AND wine?  Done and done.

I arrived a little late so missed out on some of the delectable cakes.  Well, I figured they were delectable given the numerous people that would whisper in my ear, “Vote for number such and such.  I promise, it was amazing.”  Yeah.  Well, I used my free vote to stake a claim in Confections of a Cupcake’s “Carrot Gold” creation.  A perfectly moist treat with sweet, cream cheese frosting, and a pretty dusting of edible gold.  Sure, the gold didn’t do anything–except make you feel like a princess for eating it!  Everyone knows that’s why you eat cupcakes anyway, to feel like a princess. › Continue reading

Cupcake Contest!

eat-cupcake-nowMan, why did I miss this competition? Last Sunday Ivy Bakery in Bay Ridge had a cupcake eating contest.  The Daily News reported:

“In a flurry of chocolate cream and crumby debris, the yoga teacher crammed her last cupcake – No. 17 – winning the contest, and defeating her closest competitor by just one of the sweet treats.

Ivy Bakery held its first cupcake-eating contest outside of the shop on 87th St. in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The five competitors were given five minutes to inhale as many chocolate cupcakes as possible. The winner took home $75 and dubious bragging rights.”

Hello Cupcake: Magnolia Bakery

Cupcake from Magnolia Bakery

There is nothing that says “Happy Birthday me” like a pretty little, chocolate topped, sprinkled cupcake.  So, given that tomorrow is my birthday, I wanted to share one of my favorite city cupcakes thus far.  For a measly $2.50, Magnolia Bakery dishes up the freshest cupcake in the West Village.  Though on a Tuesday night the lines proved nothing compared to the Sex in the City hyped monsters› Continue reading

Hello Cupcake: The Shoppe in Denver

cupcakes from The Shoppe in DenverWith adorable little cakes like these and free wine, is it any surprise I could get talked into going to a fashion show while visiting my folks in Denver?  Really, that’s all it takes to get me out.  These particular little two-bite beauties come from The Shoppe, a bakery in Denver, Colorado.  After debating between flavors like Nutella and S’Mores, I went for a chocolate-raspberry, chocolate-mint, vanilla frosting on chocolate cake, and a chocolate frosting on white cake.  The basic chocolate and vanilla cupcakes were tasty and I wished I had only gotten those.  The flavored frosting on the other cupcakes proved way too sweet for me.  But still, they were cupcakes and my friends can attest to the glee that follows such petite adventures.

Hello Cupcake: Starbucks’ Chocolate Cupcake

Starbuck’s Chocolate Cupcake
While on my way to a play at Brooklyn College today, my friend and I decided to stop at Starbucks for a cup of tea.  As I ordered a medium green, my eye caught sight of a plate of chocolate cupcakes perfectly lined up and gleaming under the florescent bakery case light.  Tall, dark chocolate with white and brown frosting stars on top, they looked divine and cost $1.95 for one or $5.95 for four. Not one to pass up these little beauties, I decided that would be the perfect thing to bring to the show.   And they were.  Just as my attention waned it was time for intermission and for me to see if the delicate cakes were as good as they looked.

When I peeled off the wrapper bits of cake tumbled down.  With no napkin on hand I knew I had to act fast and took a bite.  It was…good. The cake part was moist, fluffy and not too sweet.  The frosting was a little too sugary for my taste but not as bad as the stuff you find on a little kid’s birthday cake.  The balance between cake and frosting worked well too.  Definitely this cupcake was worth the price and for something from Starbucks its quality surprised me.  The down side is now there is yet another place where I know I can get a decent cupcake, and this place is easy to get to.  But with a belly full of delectable cake, I’m certainly not complaining.
