1818-1848

Vineyards were planted all across upstate New York. Elijah Fay planted one in Chautauqua County in 1818. Richard Underhill opened the first commercial vineyard and winery in Hudson Valley in 1827. Reverend William Boostwick planted the first vineyard in the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York in 1829. Now known as Brotherhood Winery, the first commercial winery in the Hudson Valley opened in 1839 and was called Blooming Grove.  Also, the first grapes were grown in the Niagara District and Canandaigua Lake.
